8 Days 7 Night Kilimanjaro Trekking Machame Route

Itinerary Details

DAY 1: Arrival in Tanzania

On arrival at Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport, your private driver will meet and transfer you to your hotel for dinner and overnight. In the evening, your mountain guide will join you for a detailed briefing and equipment check to prepare you for the climb.

Hiking time: 5 hrs | Distance: 7 km | Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast, drive about 90 minutes to Machame Gate for registration and lunch. Begin your trek through the lush rainforest, often muddy and slippery, with chances of rainfall. Porters will set up camp and prepare meals ahead of your arrival. Overnight at Machame Camp, where temperatures can drop significantly at night.

Hiking time: 5 hrs | Distance: 7 km | Habitat: Moorland
Today’s hike gradually leaves the forest behind and enters the moorland zone. The trail climbs steadily with stunning views of Kibo Peak and the glaciers of the Western Breach. After a hot lunch en route, continue to Shira Cave Camp for dinner and overnight. Expect much colder conditions than the night before.

Hiking time: 7 hrs | Distance: 11 km | Habitat: Semi-Desert
Trek east across rocky semi-desert landscapes to reach Lava Tower (4,600m), where lunch is served. This is often the toughest day so far, with many climbers experiencing mild altitude symptoms. Afterward, descend about 700m to Barranco Camp, beautifully located in a valley below the imposing Barranco Wall. The descent provides excellent acclimatization benefits. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Hiking time: 4 hrs | Distance: 7 km | Habitat: Semi-Desert
After breakfast, climb the Barranco Wall, the steepest yet most exciting part of the trek. Though challenging, it requires no technical skills, only steady footing and occasional use of hands. Continue across ridges and into the Karanga Valley, passing the last water point, before reaching Karanga Camp. Dinner and overnight here.

Hiking time: 3 hrs | Distance: 2 km | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Ascend through a dry alpine desert with sparse vegetation until you reach Barafu Camp. From here, the summit path and Mawenzi Peak come into view, heightening the anticipation. After an early dinner and final preparation, rest early before the summit attempt.

Hiking time: 12–14 hrs | Distance: 14 km | Habitat: Scree, snow & forest
Wake at 11:00 PM for tea and biscuits before starting your midnight summit push. Ascend steep scree slopes to Stella Point (5,757m), the most demanding section of the climb. From here, it’s a one-hour trek along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. After brief celebrations, descend to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.

Hiking time: 3 hrs | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Forest
Enjoy a final breakfast before descending through lush forest to Mweka Gate. Here you’ll sign the register and collect your well-earned summit certificate—green for Stella Point, gold for Uhuru Peak. Celebrate with your crew before transferring to Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, dinner, and overnight. Alternatively, proceed directly to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight.
